Bento

 

Bento is a single-portion takeout or home-packed meal common in Japanese cuisine. A traditional bento consists of rice, fish or meat, and one or more pick-led or cooked vegetables, usually in a box-shaped container.

Although bento are readily available in many places throughout Japan, including convenience stores, train stations, and department stores, t is still common for Japanese homemaker to spend time and energy for their spouse, child, or themselves producing a carefully prepared lunch box.

Sashimi is raw fish, or shellfish, usually served with wasabi and soy sauce. However, to fully enjoy the flavour, the wasabi should be placed on the fish and the fish dipped in the soy sauce (rather than being mixed into the soy sauce), as the flavour of the soy sauce overpowers the fragrance of the wasabi.

Refraining from mixing the wasabi into the soy sauce also gives you the benefit of enjoying different flavoured seasoning for sashimi.

Sashimi

 

The essence of sushi is raw (or cooked) fish, shellfish, egg tofu or vegetables served with vinegared rice. There are several forms which sushi takes,two main styles are nigiri-sushi and maki-sushi.

Nigiri-sushi is a finger of rice moulded in the hand with a topping such as a small fillet of fish or tamago-yaki (omelette flavoured with dashi stock. Gunkan-maki is the same finger of moulded rice with a piece of seaweed wrapped around it and a topping such as cod roe.

Maki-sushi is sushi rice and other ingredients rolled up in nori seaweed.

A thin roll (hoso-maki) has a single ingredient and is cut into six pieces; a thick roll (futo-maki) has a mixture of ingredients and is cut into four pieces.

There is also an inside-out roll where the seaweed being rolled on the inside.

Donburi means ‘bowl’ in Japanese. This is Japanese‘rice bow dish’ consisting of fish, meat, Vegetables or other ingredients simmered together and served over rice. Donburi meals are served in oversized rice bowls, usually enjoyed with a bowl of miso soup.

stock), soy sauce and mirin (sweet cooking sake). You will also find a small pyramid of daikon (Japanese radish) topped with ginger on the ginger on the plate with the tempura which should be mixed into the dipping sauce before eating. Dip each piece of tempura into the sauce briefly so that it does not lose its crispiness, and enjoy.

Noodle are a popular item and one of the main staples in Japanese cuisine, Many types are either served chilled with dipping sauces in the hot summer months and in soups or hot dishes during the cooler and winter months.

The general term used to describe noodle in Japanese is ‘Men’. Japanese cooking holds four categories of men: Ramen, Soba and Undo.
